One of the more common questions I am asked on a daily basis is how to get Internet Explorer out of Full Screen Mode. Kiosk mode or Full Screen mode is enabled if the bottom task bar (including the Start button and clock) disappear along with almost everything at the top of the browser window as well.

You can see an example of full screen mode by viewing the screenshot below. You notice the top bar just contains standard buttons bar gone are the title bar, menu bar, and address bar in Internet Explorer. This view may be ok to look at a website, but when you want to type something in the address bar to go somewhere else in can be a problem.

Luckily, getting switching between normal mode and full screen mode is very easy. Its just one key on the keyboard – F11.

Press F11 to switch between full screen and normal viewing.

That’s all there is to it.

Why Wont Flash Player Install?

Adobe Flash is a plugin for Internet Explorer and Firefox that allows active content to be displayed in your web browser. As with other third party programs, its updated on a regular basis. In many cases, the Flash Security Update KB923789 in Windows Update would not install properly. In other cases, you may have received an error “you must install a later version of the Macromedia Flash Player”.

In April 2008, Adobe is releasing another security update that may cause issues too. Because of these problems, you may have to uninstall and reinstall the flash player to may it work properly. Follow the steps below to download the Flash Player Uninstaller and then reinstall it. In most cases, a reinstall will fix any issues with Flash Player.

Last week, a hacked flash ad injected into online advertising enabled malware to attack systems just by visitors viewing the infected web page. These “malvertisements” may become commonplace in the future and are even more reason to uninstall any old versions of Adobe Flash Player and install the latest version. Read more about Flash Security further down the page.

Download the Adobe Flash Player Uninstaller

Many times, just uninstalling and reinstalling the Adobe Flash Player from the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel will not solve the problem. If the Flash Player is corrupted, it may not remove properly and therefore an new installations will not proceed correctly. Click on the following link to download the Adobe Flash Player Uninstaller and save it to your desktop.

http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/

Run the uninstaller program and then reboot your computer to complete the uninstall.

Download the latest version of Flash Player

Now that Adobe Flash has been uninstalled, go to the Adobe site and download the latest flash player.

http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer

Security Level Issues Won’t Allow Flash Player to Download

Sometimes, browser security will not allow you to download the Flash Player correctly. If this happens in Internet Explorer, check the following items to allow the download.

To change your security level:

Open Internet Explorer.

Click on Tools, Internet Options

Click on the Security Tab

Click Custom Level

Find the section titled “ActiveX controls and plug-ins”

Choose Prompt for “Download Signed ActiveX Controls”

Choose Prompt for “Run ActiveX Controls and Plug-ins”

Click OK twice to close the options screen

More Troubleshooting Help for Flash Player

If this procedure does not allow you to install Adobe Flash, you may want to visit the Troubleshooting FAQ on Adobe’s site.

Flash Security

Because of the recent vulnerabilities found in Flash applications that allow malware code to be released when a flash file is viewed, you may want to turn flash off when viewing flash enabled websites. This is a more extreme measure, but should be considered.

Here are some utilities that will help turn flash off when needed.

For Internet Explorer:

TurnFlash – a utility to turn flash on or off from the system tray

No! Flash – free utility to disable flash, java, and more

For Firefox:

FlashBlock – an add-on extension to block flash, shockwave, and authorware in Firefox

To read more about this flash vulnerability visit the Windows Secrets article

Browsera is an all-in-one, web-based tool for testing web sites for errors, complications, and layout issues. Unlike other similar tools, it does more than just take screenshots of various browsers; it provides an in-depth assessment of problematic areas in need of attention.

Browsera is a program that has features similar to previously mentioned browser comparison sites like BrowserShots and IETester. Browsera kicks things up a notch, not only showing you what your site will look like to users with assorted browsers, but identifying and flagging problematic areas, making less dirty work for you.

Browsera is free with registration for use on up to 25 pages per month, which should be plenty for your weekend tinkering. If you need more, the service offers additional tiered pricing levels ranging from $49 a month to $499 a month as users and page views increase. The service currently runs its tests against the following browsers:

Windows: Firefox 2.0.0.20, 3.0.12, 3.5.0; Internet Explorer 6.0.3790.3959, 7.0.5730.13, 8.0.6001.18702; Mac: Safari 3.2.1 (5525.27.1), 4.0.3 (5531.9)

This is a built-in feature of all windows keeps track the user’s history, for example the websites you have visited, the documents you have opened and the keywords or files for which you’ve searched.

If you use web-based email like Yahoo or Gmail, you know the biggest drawback occurs when you click on a link on a web page to email someone and you realize the default email program on your computer is not the web based email one. Instead of opening Yahoo Mail, Outlook Express or some other client-side email program opens. Of course, if you have Yahoo Mail Plus, you could setup Outlook Express or any other default email application to use it. But is there a simple way to set your default email application to Yahoo Mail or Gmail.

There are actually two ways to accomplish this, unfortunately only one way works in both Windows XP and Windows Vista. If you follow the steps below you should be able to use the mailto links on a web page to email someone easily.

Using Yahoo Messenger

The first way to set Yahoo as your default email program is to install Yahoo Messenger. Yahoo Messenger can be download at http://messenger.yahoo.com. If its installed correctly it will set Yahoo as your default email application. You will need to install the Browser Services option to make this work properly. Without the browser services installed, you still cannot set Yahoo Mail as your default.

Once Yahoo Messenger is installed, follow these steps to set the default email program.

1) Open Control Panel
2) Double-click on Internet Options
3) Click on the Program tab
4) Select Yahoo Mail from the drop down list (as shown below)

5) Click Ok
6) Close Control Panel

Unfortunately, this procedure DOES NOT work with Windows Vista computers.

Using YAttach!

YAttach! is a free simple to install program developed by a fellow named Chris Wood. It was created to allow someone to attach files to Yahoo Mail but works great at opening Yahoo Mail with a new message window all filled out when you click a mailto link on a web page. YAttach works in Windows XP and Windows Vista.

Yattach! sets itself as the default email program in Windows and will work in Internet Explorer, Firefox, and other browsers. When you click on a mailto link you’ll see a window pop up similar to the one below, then it will open Yahoo Mail and create a new message with the To: field already filled in.

Sometimes, the program will appear to hang at the screen above instead of opening Yahoo Mail. This issue can be easily resolved by logging into Yahoo Mail and choosing the option to “keep me signed in”.

YAttach! is the easiest to use program to allow web based email programs the ability to send documents directly from your computer or intercept mailto links clicked on web pages.

Download YAttach!

There is also a program called GAttach! that accomplishes the same thing for Gmail. My only complaint about that version is that it creates a message in the drafts folder instead of opening a new message window. Because of that issue, I prefer the Gmail Notifier. During the installation of the Gmail Notifier be sure to check the box for “use for outgoing email”.

Google Chrome Frame Turns Internet Explorer into a FrankenChrome Browser

Google today released a new browser plug-in called Google Chrome Frame that creates an unholy union between Internet Explorer and Google Chrome, rendering web pages in IE using Chrome’s rendering engine.

That rendering technology includes Chrome’s support for HTML5 and its lightning-fast JavaScript engine. How does it turn IE into Chrome? By creating a new frame inside of Internet Explorer that basically embeds the Chrome browser. It’s sort of like the previously mentioned IE Tab tool that embeds IE in Firefox, so users can access the now-rare IE-only sites. In this case, though, it’s embedding Chrome in IE instead of the other way around, for the much more common dilemma of sites that won’t render correctly in Internet Explorer.

The (most) obvious question: Why would I install this plug-in rather than switch browsers to Chrome? The folks at Google point to IT lockdown that won’t allow users to install a new browser; Ars wonders whether such restrictive IT departments would be any more likely to approve this plug-in. If nothing else, it’s a pretty bold move on the part of Google.

The other obvious question: How do I get it working? Actually, you don’t have to do anything—it’s up to web developers to throw a single tag on their pages to ask Internet Explorer to render a page with the Chrome Frame, if it’s installed. We’re pretty sure it’ll only be a short while until someone comes up with a tweak to make Chrome Frame a default rendering tool on every page, but until then, it’s up to the web building community to take notice.

The Google Chrome Frame plug-in is a free, open-source download for Windows only, and works with IE6, 7, and 8. It’s currently in its early stages, so expect an occasional bug or two.

The image associated with this post is best viewed using a browser.Google Translate could previously take pasted text or web URLs for translation, and the Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer was offering on-the-fly translation. Now Google’s made it easy to put desktop documents through its multi-language processing.

Hit “Upload a document” on the Translate main page, and you’ll be prompted to upload Word documents, PowerPoint presentation files, PDFs, HTML files, or straight-up text files. All of them are transformed into HTML and translated to your language of choice. That means you lose any special formatting, of course, but you get a fairly speedy turn-around to get a grasp on what’s being said in a foreign language file.

Speed Up Slow Firefox 3.5 Windows Start-Ups

Firefox 3.5 pulls data from certain file locations for randomized security purposes. Sometimes, though, that can lead to annoying slow start-ups in Windows. You can speed things up by cleaning out certain folder locations.

For whatever reason, having too many temporary, history, or recent document files sitting in your Windows locations slows down Firefox 3.5’s data generation processes, as has been reported as a bug. The Mozilla Links blog recommends cleaning out these folders to move the browser’s work along:

C:\Documents and Settings\*user*\Local Settings\History
C:\Documents and Settings\*user*\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\*user*\My Recent Documents
C:\Documents and Settings\*user*\Temp\

On Vista or Windows 7 systems, simply replace “Documents and Settings” with “Users.” Setting up Firefox to automatically clean out your temporary files after browsing, as explained at the link below, helps prevent the accumulation from building again, but users who trade browsing time with Internet Explorer may have to occasionally work this manual method to wipe out those files.
