At $99 per year for a service that’s historically shaky at best, we don’t know a lot of people who are all that keen on using MobileMe, but some features—specifically, the Find My iPhone feature (and the newly released app)—do make the service somewhat enticing.

MobileMe Mail updates with a new interface that looks very similar to Mail on the iPad, and looks rather nice. Google Chrome: Chrome Notepad is an effective extension that syncs notes and even the last place you left off in your document across multiple computers, using Chrome’s built-in bookmark sync functionality.

There’s not many note-syncing extensions that remember the last caret position you left off on, but Chrome Notepad will sync that information across any Chrome installation.

The size of the notepad is configurable. In order to enable syncing, you’ll need to turn on bookmark syncing and make sure not to delete the newly created bookmark folder called “BSync”. The new Google Docs Demo creates quick collaborative documents with a 24-hour shelf-life, no Google account necessary.The Google Docs Demo includes the ability to create documents, spreadsheets, and drawings. The document is shareable via a copy-and-paste link, which can be sent to any user. Documents created are only available for 24 hours before they’re deleted from Google’s server, making it good for short-term collaboration, like if you just want to quickly work some ideas out with a coworker or a friend but don’t need persistent storage.

Unfortunately, it’s not as fully featured as Google Docs proper, and it would be cool if these instant workspaces weren’t just temporary—like Etherpad was before Google bought it. You can’t save a document to your computer, but you can print it. Similarly, Google Spreadsheet’s in-built chat feature does not work with the demo.

Android: When you’re traveling where a cellular connection is fairly certain, Google Maps’ own Navigation tool is a total GPS replacement. For those without data plans, or heading into the wilds, MapDroyd makes for a nice offline map backup.

When you start the app, you’ll want to hit the Menu button and head right to “Manage Maps,” where you can then drill down from continents to countries, to states and provinces and districts, and check off the maps you’d like to have available offline. Sizes will vary, but assuming you’ve got a decent microSD card installed, 34 MB for New York state, for example, is hardly a burden. The map data comes from OpenStreetMap, which has some fairly reliable highway and main thoroughfare information.

Gas stations and major restaurants will show up on your maps, as will other landmarks, depending on how well covered your area is by the open-source mapping crowd. You don’t get directions or automatic searches of nearby spots, but the app can locate you by GPS. If it can’t fix your GPS position, you will, unfortunately, have to manually zoom in from the world view to your own little corner of the world, where you’re trying desperately to get back on the highway.

Google’s Gmail tweak broke some of the more popular features of my Better Gmail 2 Firefox extension this week, including Folders4Gmail and Hide Spam Count. Thanks to the quick work of Arend v. Reinersdorff, the problems have been fixed. If you’re a Better Gmail 2 user and your labels aren’t collapsing properly or your Spam count is showing when it shouldn’t, hit the “Find Updates” button in Firefox’s Add-ons dialog to get the fix, or download the most recent version directly from Mozilla Add-ons.
